Scenic Drives in Falmouth, MA

Updated: Jun 29, 2022

So you’re traveling to the Cape for vacation and want to know the best routes for a scenic drive. Here is one of my favorites that includes the most popular beaches and tourist attractions in Falmouth and Woods Hole.

No matter where you are staying in Falmouth, you are only a 10-20 minute drive to some of the most beautiful scenery in New England. From bird watching to fishing, swimming, and hiking, Falmouth is home to diverse agriculture and wildlife.

About 5 miles before crossing one of the bridges to the Cape, open your windows and let the salty air fill your senses. Like the waves on the beach, you will feel your stress and overwhelm just wash away.

Scenic drive

Route 28 is one of the two main highways that run the length of the Cape. It starts at the Bourne Bridge and continues to Orleans, where it changes to Rt 6 until you reach the tip of the Cape in Provincetown.

You can begin your journey from any point on Rt 28. Heading west from Mashpee, take a left onto Central Ave. At the end of the road, you will have to turn right onto Menauhant Rd. This road will change names as you drive, but it curves past Menauhant Beach, The Falmouth Heights Beach, as you pass the Island Queen boarding area, you will take a left onto Robbins Road. At the end of this short road, take a left onto Scranton Ave. You will pass the Windfall Market, The Falmouth Harbor, and Jim's Clam Shack. At the end, take a left and that will lead you towards Surf Drive Beach, The Nobska Lighthouse, and Nobska Beach. When you come to the end of this road, a left-hand turn will take you into Woods Hole and a right-hand turn will bring you into Falmouth Center.

Along this route, you can stop for photo opportunities at the beaches and lighthouse. You will not be able to go into the beach parking lots without a sticker or by paying a daily fee of $20 or $30 depending on location. If you have your bicycles, you can park in Woods Hole and ride the Shining Sea Bikeway to North Falmouth (20miles round trip).

If you choose to take a right at the road’s end, you can go to a beloved cove and harbor called The Knob. You can go for a nature walk, spend time on the beach, or do some bird watching. From the top of the Knob on a clear day, you can see New Bedford, the canal, and the Elizabeth Islands. Give yourself a couple of hours to appreciate the spectacular views (limited parking)

As you come out of the parking area, go straight and turn left onto Woods Hole Road. Continue for about 2.7miles and take a left onto Highfield Dr. At the end of that road, you can see the magnificently restored Highfield Hall & Gardens and The Falmouth Theater Guild. If you’re lucky enough, you may even get to see a performance. Or, if you want to have a long nature walk, you can access Beebe Woods through the back lot. Either way, this is a must-see important piece of Falmouth’s history.

Other interesting things to do and see in Falmouth are: Spohr Gardens, Old Silver Beach, Jim’s Clam Shack, and Falmouth Harbor
